There are a number of application areas where the three functions of the NFC technology – card emulation, reader-writer mode and P2P operation – can be used. Presently we assume that the most popular services will be those ones, where there is already a plastic card based operation, with established acceptance infrastructure, and the mobile handset coupled with the NFC antenna, and potentially a secure element, can provide added user convenience and value added functions. However it is very likely that beside the presently seen core services – payment, ticketing, access, loyalty – there will be a range of new use-cases – the long tail –, which combined may even outweigh in terms of customer numbers or business relevance any of the leading services.
It is also important to note, that one single service, ported into the mobile NFC environment, shows limited advantage over the traditional service scenario. There must be a number of services, side-by-side, running in the mobile device, to see the real benefits of the new technology.
